University of Virginia Center for Politics

MBB designed the renovation and expansion of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, a non-partisan institute housed in the historic Montesano house on UVA’s North Grounds. Currently in construction (expected completion in 2025), the new center will welcome students by day and host events and receptions in the evening.

The addition complements the original red-brick Georgian building, and aligns with its central axis. The two buildings connect with a glass passage and accessible courtyard entrance. The addition provides flexible new public-facing program spaces including a lounge, community space, seminar room, and library.

Our team worked closely with stakeholders from the Center for Politics as well as the University Architect and a variety of boards and committees to finalize the design, fueling new opportunities for programming.
